About Lapu-Lapu Monument - Mactan Shrine

This outdoor collection of statues tells the story of two Filipino heroes with different backgrounds. Magellan Shrine is dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan (Portuguese explorer), who arrived in the Philippines as the first European. This shrine is believed to be located at the site where Magellan died in the Battle of Mactan. This important aspect of Philippine history can be explored to gain a better understanding of local culture. A plaque on the stone platform indicates the date Magellan died in battle, which is April 27, 1521.

This monument dates back to 1866, and was built by Spanish colonial rulers. The plaque proclaiming Spanish Glory, and another with Magellan's Portuguese original name, is worth a look. Preparations for the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations were made in the Philippines by the completion of conservation works on the Magellan Monument.

Nice Monument, but it could be better. The tourist facilities are poor and the waterway surrounding is full of trash.

This statue is in honor of Lapu Lapu, the Philippine's first hero. He fought the Spanish explorers led by Ferdinand Magellan at the Battle of Mactan 1521. The shrine and bronze statue were recently restored to improve its appearance for tourists from around the world.
