The history of the Oslob whale sharks Rhincodon Typus, also known locally as Tuki, was listed by World Wildlife Organization as an endangered species. Since the 1980s, these whale sharks are seen in Oslob's waters. The whale shark was considered a pest by Oslob's fisherman, who thought it would destroy their fishing nets and drive away other fish. Jerson Soriano from Tan-awan Oslob began feeding the whale shark with baby shrimps or krill after it kept bumping its head to his banca during fishing. After the feeding, many more whale sharks of different lengths arrived at Tan-awan's shores.
Big Mama, a 9 meter long whale shark was shown. The fishermen were asked by dive resorts in the vicinity if they would be willing to guide them to the whale watching site. The fishermen initially charged P150-P200 per person for their services. However, other tour companies later offered them a higher price and the TOWSFA fishermen group was formed.
